Acupuncture, frequently combined with Chinese herbal medicine, has been used for centuries to treat infertility. More recently, acupuncture has been gaining more respect by the scientific community as western doctors show increasing interest and support in the ability of acupuncture to treat infertility. Acupuncture helps regulate the endocrine system, affecting hormone levels, ovulation, and menstrual cycles. It benefits the sympathetic nervous system, which helps to increase blood flow to the uterus and increase endometrial lining, which enhances implantation.  Acupuncture improves blood levels of reproductive hormones, and plays a role in the normalization of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, which is integral to the process of conception. It has also been shown to increase male fertility, resulting in increased sperm count and motility.
