FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions

Whether trying acupuncture for the first time, visiting Nest out for the first time, or just having a bout of curiosity, we’re sure you have some questions.  We’ve tackled our Top 10 questions below, but as always, please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any outstanding concerns or want any additional information.

1. Does acupuncture hurt?
Pain tolerance is of course subjective, but most people who shudder at the thought of needles are pleasantly surprised at the lack of pain.  While at some sensitive or trigger points there can be initial discomfort, the incredible relaxation benefits of quickly take over.  Even the most squeamish patients often leave their session feeling restored, revived and even a bit blissed out.

2. Is acupuncture safe?
Acupuncture is absolutely safe when performed by trained, skilled practitioners.  Just don’t try it at home.

3. Are herbs safe?
Chinese herbs have been used effectively and safely for thousands of years.  When prescribed by skilled practitioners, the Chinese herbal formulas are individualized for your particular condition, extremely effective and rarely have any side effects. The herbal companies that we use are meticulous about the potency, quality and safety of every product.  Just as with your traditional doctor, please be sure to let us know all the prescriptions, supplements and vitamins you take so that we can be sure to prescribe the most effective formula.

4. How does acupuncture work for fertility?
There are as many theories as there are acupuncture points (hundreds).  We at Nest are not so fond of the vague or esoteric answers here, rather we rely upon (and often participate in) the extensive research done in this field.   Predominant research which shows that acupuncture improves increases ovulation rates, increases blood flow to the uterus (which improves chances of implantation) and results in overall better pregnancy outcomes.

We'd be more than happy to discuss this with you in more detail or you can always peruse the wide range of studies listed in the Research section of our site).

5. How long does it take?
We wish we could give you an exact date, but what we can give you are more specifics based on your individual history and presentation. In general, we work with people for a minimum of 3-6 months. (It takes 3 months to develop new eggs).

6. How often do I need to come?
Treatment plans are as varied as our patients.  Part of our initial consultation will be to create a treatment plan that is specific to your needs.  In general, we see people twice a week so that we can closely monitor your cycle and progress. And as acupucture works cumulatively, we believe in building a strong foundation, then moderating as need from there.

7. Should I continue treatment once I’m pregnant?
You can continue to get acupuncture throughout your entire pregnancy if you wish. We usually recommend that once you are pregnant, you continue to come once a week through your first trimester to support the pregnancy and help with any of the common symptoms associated with early pregnancy.  We’ve found great success using acupuncture for treating the insomnia and nausea that often comes in the first trimester.  Many of our patients also use acupuncture as a baby-safe way to treat any non-pregnancy related health concerns.

8. Do you work with IUI and IVFs?
We certainly can and we often do work in conjuction with Western fertility methods. In addition to Nest, we run an acupuncture clinic at Pacific Fertility Center. We work closely with patients and physicians at both clinics to prepare you for your assisted reproductive techniques.

9. Do you accept insurance?
We accept most insurance, although reimbursement varies depending on your policy. We’ll be happy to check it for you when you come in.

10. What should I do before and after treatments?
Be sure to eat before you come in. Other than that, dress comfortably and plan to try to take it easy after a treatment.  One of the great side-benefits of acupuncture is relaxation – we believe in making that last as long as possible.
